How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Home? A Seasonal Guide for Coastal Newcastle

By Brilliance Cleaning Team 6 min read

Quick answer: Most homes benefit from a deep clean two to four times a year, on top of regular weekly or fortnightly cleaning. Coastal Newcastle homes often need the higher end of that range, because salt air, sand and humidity build up faster on windows, tracks, bathrooms and soft furnishings. A simple seasonal schedule stops mould and grime from taking hold.

Deep clean vs regular clean

What a regular clean covers

A regular clean keeps on top of everyday mess: benches, sinks and stovetops, bathrooms, dusting reachable surfaces, vacuuming and mopping floors, and emptying bins. It's maintenance, done often enough that the home stays comfortable.

What a deep clean adds

A deep clean goes after the build-up that regular cleaning doesn't reach:

  • Inside cupboards, drawers and wardrobes
  • Behind and under appliances, where accessible
  • Oven, rangehood and filters degreased
  • Shower screens descaled and grout scrubbed
  • Skirting boards, door frames, doors and light switches
  • Ceiling fans, light fittings and cobwebs on cornices
  • Window tracks, sills, screens and the inside of glass
  • Blinds dusted or wiped
  • Mould spots on bathroom ceilings and around windows

Think of it as resetting the home so that regular cleaning can keep it there.

How often should you deep clean your home in Newcastle?

There's no single rule, but these guidelines work for most households:

  • Twice a year for small households in homes away from the coast, with regular cleaning in between.
  • Three times a year for families, homes with pets and anyone with allergies.
  • Every season for beachside homes, older homes prone to damp, busy share houses, and homes with indoor pets and young kids.

You'll also want a deep clean before moving in, before regular cleaning starts, before hosting a big event, and after illness has been through the house.

Signs your home is due for a deep clean

If you're not sure whether it's time, look for these:

  • Grey or black lines in the shower grout that don't shift with a normal clean
  • A sticky film on the rangehood, cupboard doors or tiles near the cooktop
  • Dust on top of door frames, fans and light fittings when you look up
  • Window tracks full of grit, insects or sand
  • Musty smells in wardrobes, linen cupboards or the laundry
  • Marks around light switches, door handles and the bottom of doors

Two or three of these together usually means a regular clean is no longer enough on its own.

Renters and routine inspections

If you rent, a deep clean before a routine inspection can save stress. In NSW, routine inspections can be carried out up to four times in any 12-month period, with written notice from the landlord or agent. A seasonal deep clean timed around those visits keeps the home in good shape and makes the eventual end of lease clean easier too.

Why coastal homes need more attention

Salt

Homes near Merewether, Bar Beach, Newcastle Beach, Stockton and Redhead get a fine layer of salt on windows, screens and outdoor furniture. Salt attracts moisture, so glass looks hazy again quickly, and aluminium window frames and sliding door tracks can corrode faster if salt is left to sit. Rinsing and wiping them regularly helps them last.

Sand

Sand comes home on feet, towels, boards and dogs. It collects in sliding door tracks, under rugs and around entry mats, and it acts like sandpaper on timber floors. Regular vacuuming helps, but tracks and corners need a proper clean every few months.

Older homes near the coast

Many coastal Newcastle homes are older weatherboard, fibro or brick cottages, along with Federation houses and terraces closer to town. Older homes often have less insulation, timber windows that let in more air and moisture, and bathrooms with small or no exhaust fans. They can be beautiful to live in, but they usually need deep cleaning more often than a new, well-sealed house.

Humidity and mould

Newcastle's warm, humid summers make it easier for mould to grow, particularly in bathrooms without good ventilation, wardrobes on external walls and rooms that stay closed. Mould spots on ceilings, black grout and musty smells in cupboards are all signs. Small patches on hard surfaces can usually be cleaned, but if mould keeps coming back there's often a moisture source, such as a leak or poor ventilation, that needs fixing. Renters should report recurring mould or leaks to their agent.

A seasonal deep cleaning schedule for coastal Newcastle homes

Spring (September to November)

Spring is the natural time for the biggest clean of the year.

  • Wash windows, screens and tracks after winter
  • Clear condensation marks and mould spots from around windows
  • Clean ceiling fans before they're switched on
  • Wash or air bedding, cushions and throws
  • Deep clean the kitchen, including the oven and rangehood
  • Clean outdoor furniture ready for summer

Summer (December to February)

Summer brings sand, salt and visitors.

  • Clean sliding door tracks and screens monthly
  • Wipe salt haze off glass doors and balcony balustrades
  • Run exhaust fans and open windows to keep bathrooms dry
  • Vacuum under rugs and cushions where sand collects
  • Wash beach towels and mats often so sand doesn't spread
  • Clean the fridge before and after holiday gatherings

Autumn (March to May)

Late summer humidity often leaves its mark, so autumn is the time to check for mould.

  • Inspect bathroom ceilings, wardrobes and the backs of cupboards for mould
  • Descale shower screens and scrub grout
  • Clean behind and under furniture before the cooler months
  • Service or clean air-conditioner filters as per the manufacturer's instructions
  • Wipe skirting boards and door frames

Winter (June to August)

Winter is about condensation and air flow.

  • Wipe condensation from windows in the morning, especially in bedrooms
  • Keep wardrobes slightly open and avoid overfilling them
  • Clean heater filters and vents
  • Dust blinds and curtains, which collect more dust with windows closed
  • Book a deep clean before spring so the year starts fresh

Between deep cleans: small habits that help

  • Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and after every shower
  • Squeegee the shower screen after use
  • Keep a mat at every external door and a basket for beach gear
  • Open the house up on dry, breezy days
  • Wipe the stovetop and rangehood after cooking
  • Vacuum sliding door tracks every week or two

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a deep clean and a spring clean?

They're largely the same thing. A spring clean is a deep clean done at the change of season, working through every room top to bottom, including inside cupboards, behind appliances, tracks, fans and grout.

How long does a deep clean take?

It depends on the size and condition of the home. A deep clean of a three-bedroom house often takes a team several hours, and longer if there's heavy build-up or mould.

How do I stop mould coming back in my bathroom?

Keep the room dry: run the exhaust fan during and after showers, open windows when you can and squeegee the screen. If mould keeps returning, there may be a leak or ventilation problem. Renters should report it to their agent.

Should I get a deep clean before starting regular cleaning?

Usually, yes. A deep clean brings the home up to a standard that regular visits can maintain, which makes every later clean quicker and more effective.
